Crib Mattress Support Replacement: Frames, Springs, Brackets and Hangers

By Jan Bay | Updated July 30, 2026

A crib mattress support is the metal spring frame, platform or bracket-mounted base that holds the mattress inside the crib. Crib mattress support replacements are not universal, so the correct part must match the crib brand, exact model number, production date, attachment points and original manufacturer documentation.

Need to check current crib mattress support listings?

If you are missing crib screws, mattress support parts, bolts, brackets, barrel nuts, mattress support hardware, or a hardware kit, you can check current inventory here:

Inventory listings are provided as general reference only. Crib parts are brand-specific and model-specific, and no listing should be treated as compatibility confirmation for any crib. Before purchasing or using any replacement crib hardware, verify the crib brand, exact model number, production date, part location, measurements, and original manufacturer documentation whenever possible. Do not use a crib with missing, damaged, substituted, or unverified parts.

The part may be called a mattress support, spring frame, mattress base, support platform, mattress board, hanger assembly or crib spring in the original manual.

Can a Crib Mattress Support Be Replaced?

A crib mattress support may sometimes be replaced when the crib manufacturer still supplies the original part or identifies an approved replacement for the exact crib model. The support is part of the crib’s structural assembly, however, so a frame that is merely the same length and width should not be assumed to fit.

After years of reading visitor questions about crib parts, I have learned that the missing piece is often not the whole frame. It is one lost hanger, one bent bracket or one model-specific connector that makes the complete support look impossible to identify.

The outside measurements are the easy part. The corner attachment pattern often tells you which crib family or support system to investigate next. My rule is simple: identify the crib first, identify the original support second, and shop last. I never treat “it looks like it fits” as a compatibility answer.

This guide uses United States crib terminology, CPSC recall records and U.S. safety guidance. Requirements, records and part names may differ in other countries.

The complete assembly may include a metal frame, spring grid, platform, brackets, hooks, hangers, handles and model-specific crib screws or fasteners. A missing connector can make an intact frame unusable even when the main support appears to be in good condition.

Important crib safety point

Do not use the crib while a mattress support frame, bracket, hanger, hook or fastener is missing, broken, loose, substituted or installed incorrectly. Identify the crib and verify the complete support assembly before placing a mattress or child in it.

How to Identify the Correct Crib Mattress Support Replacement

Start with the crib itself rather than with a replacement listing. The crib brand, model number and manufacture date are more useful than the mattress size alone.

Find the Crib Brand, Model Number and Manufacture Date

Look for a label on the crib headboard, footboard, side rail, mattress support or underside of the frame. Record the full model number exactly as printed. A crib name without the model number may not be enough because one manufacturer can use different support systems across several models or production years.

Also check the crib against the CPSC recall database before searching for parts. A replacement component does not change the recall status of a crib.

Locate the Original Manual or Parts Diagram

The original manual may call the part a mattress support, spring frame, mattress base, mattress platform, mattress board or spring assembly. Its parts diagram may also show whether brackets, hangers or bolts were originally supplied as separate pieces.

Use the crib instructions and manual reference to search by brand and model. The part number printed in the manual is usually more useful than a seller’s general description.

Identify the Original Support Type

Determine whether the crib originally used a metal spring frame, rigid platform, support board or another manufacturer-designed assembly. Do not assume that a spring frame and a solid platform are interchangeable simply because both can support a crib mattress.

Compare the Attachment Points

Check how the original support connects to the crib. Important identifying features can include:

  • The number and position of mounting points
  • Bracket and hanger shape
  • Hole spacing
  • Hook direction and bend angle
  • Fastener diameter and thread type
  • Available mattress-height positions
  • Whether connectors are welded to the frame or supplied separately

Before starting a search, make one identification record for the crib. Photograph the complete crib label, the whole support, each corner connection and any number stamped on the frame or hardware. Record the outside frame dimensions and the center-to-center spacing of the mounting points. These details can narrow the search, but they do not prove that a replacement is compatible.

The original manual, manufacturer record or model-specific parts diagram should confirm the final match.

Types of Crib Mattress Support Replacements

Crib manufacturers have used several kinds of mattress supports. Similar-looking cribs can have very different internal mounting systems.

Metal Crib Mattress Support Frames

A metal crib mattress support frame usually has a rectangular perimeter with an internal wire grid or spring surface. Four corner mounting points commonly connect the frame to brackets or hangers inside the crib.

A replacement metal frame must match more than the inside dimensions of the crib. The position and design of the corner connectors must also correspond with the crib’s original mounting system.

Crib Mattress Support Springs

The term crib mattress support spring often refers to the entire metal support frame rather than to a small individual spring. Manuals and listings may also use the terms crib spring, mattress spring or spring frame.

When searching old records, use all of these terms together with the manufacturer and exact model number.

Crib Mattress Support Brackets and Hooks

Brackets and hooks connect the support to mounting points in the crib frame. They can differ in length, thickness, hole spacing, bend angle and attachment method.

A visually similar bracket should not be treated as a replacement unless its compatibility with the exact crib model can be verified. The crib hardware identification reference can help distinguish brackets, hooks, bolts and other crib hardware before a search begins.

Crib Mattress Support Hangers and Handles

Some crib manuals describe the long corner connectors as hangers, hanger brackets, support arms or mattress support handles. These parts may determine both the attachment method and the available mattress height.

If the metal frame is present but cannot be connected to the crib, the missing part may be a hanger rather than the entire support assembly.

Platform and Crib Mattress Support Boards

Some cribs use a rigid manufacturer-designed platform instead of an open spring grid. Depending on the crib, the platform may be made from wood, composite material, metal or a reinforced panel.

A manufacturer-designed crib platform is not the same as a loose piece of plywood, bed slats or a general bunkie board. An improvised board should not be treated as a replacement for a missing crib support.

Adjustable Crib Mattress Supports

An adjustable crib mattress support can be mounted at more than one approved height. Adjustment may be controlled by several sets of mounting holes, fixed brackets or model-specific hanger positions.

All attachment points must correspond with the same documented height position. Use the original manual to identify the correct mounting locations and hardware for the crib.

Are Crib Mattress Supports Universal?

No. A product described as a universal crib mattress support may still differ from the original support in its dimensions, mounting geometry, corner hardware or load-bearing design.

Full-size crib mattresses may have standardized dimensions, but that does not make the structures beneath them interchangeable. Mattress size alone cannot identify a compatible crib mattress support replacement.

Be especially cautious with listings described only by width and length. Before considering a replacement, compare the crib brand, exact model number, manufacture date, support part number and attachment system.

Where to Look for a Replacement Crib Mattress Support

Begin with the crib manufacturer or the company currently responsible for the brand. Provide the exact model number, manufacture date and support part number when available.

If the crib or manufacturer has been discontinued, search for:

  • The original owner’s manual
  • An archived manufacturer parts diagram
  • The exact crib model number
  • The support part number shown in the manual
  • Model-specific manufacturer notices
  • Existing crib records and visitor submissions

The broader crib replacement parts guide explains how brand names, model numbers, production dates and original manuals are used during a parts search.

How to Install a Crib Mattress Support

Install a crib mattress support only according to the original instructions for the exact crib brand and model. Cribs use different brackets, fasteners, height positions and attachment methods, so a generic installation sequence cannot confirm that a particular support has been assembled correctly.

Before assembly, account for every part shown in the manual. Do not improvise with different bolts, homemade brackets, wire, rope, wood blocks or other substitute materials.

When the manual is unavailable or the required hardware cannot be identified, the crib should remain out of use. A similar online video or instructions for another crib model should not be used as compatibility confirmation.

How Much Weight Can a Crib Mattress Support Hold?

Do not assume that one crib mattress support weight limit applies to every crib. Check the manual, warning labels and manufacturer information for the exact crib model.

A parent or other adult should not sit, stand, climb or lie on a crib mattress support. Adult weight can place loads on the support, brackets and fasteners that are different from the crib’s intended use.

If a support has bent, cracked, pulled away from a mounting point or been subjected to unusual weight, stop using the crib and contact the manufacturer rather than attempting to straighten or reinforce the part.

When a Crib Should Not Be Used

Do not place a baby in a crib when:

  • The mattress support frame or platform is missing
  • A support bracket, hook, hanger or fastener is missing
  • The frame, spring grid or platform is bent, cracked or damaged
  • The support does not sit level
  • The support uses substituted or unidentified hardware
  • The support does not match the original manual
  • The crib has been recalled
  • The crib has been modified or repaired with improvised materials

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises checking for missing, loose, broken or incorrectly installed hardware on both the crib and its mattress support. Review the current CPSC crib safety guidance before using a crib with an uncertain history.

The guide to cribs with missing parts provides additional context for incomplete frames, unidentified hardware and discontinued crib models.

Crib Mattress Support Questions

Are crib mattress supports universal?

No. Crib mattress supports differ by manufacturer, model, production date, dimensions, attachment points, bracket shape and mounting hardware.

How do I identify the correct crib mattress support replacement?

Start with the crib brand, exact model number and manufacture date. Then compare the original manual, parts diagram, support type, attachment points and hardware rather than relying only on the outside dimensions.

Can I replace only the crib mattress support brackets or hangers?

Only use brackets, hangers or hooks documented for the exact crib model. Similar-looking pieces can differ in length, hole spacing, angle and load-bearing design.

Will a replacement crib mattress support fit if its measurements match?

Not necessarily. Matching length and width may help narrow the search, but the corner connectors, bracket positions, mounting-hole spacing and approved hardware must also match the original crib design.

Is a crib mattress support frame the same as a crib spring?

Often, yes. Manufacturer manuals and parts listings may use crib spring, mattress spring, spring frame or mattress support frame for the complete metal assembly beneath the mattress.

Can a board replace a crib mattress spring?

A loose board, bunkie board, plywood panel or improvised platform should not be treated as a replacement unless it is the support specified by the crib manufacturer for that exact model.

How do I install a crib mattress support?

Use the original instructions for the exact crib brand and model. The support type, mounting hardware and approved height positions differ between cribs, so generic installation instructions cannot confirm correct assembly.

How much weight can a crib mattress support hold?

Do not assume that one weight limit applies to every crib. Check the manual and labeling for the exact crib model, and do not place adult weight on a crib mattress support.

Can a crib mattress support hold an adult?

A crib mattress support should not be used to hold an adult. Do not sit, stand, climb or lie on the support, even when it appears sturdy. Adult weight can place unintended stress on the frame, brackets, hangers and fasteners.

Can a crib be used with a missing mattress support part?

No. Do not use a crib with a missing, broken, loose, substituted or improperly installed mattress support frame, bracket, hanger, hook or fastener.

Visitor-Submitted Crib Mattress Support Records

The section below contains brand- and model-specific crib mattress support questions, photographs and parts records submitted by visitors. These entries may help identify terminology, old manuals or discontinued crib models, but they are not manufacturer compatibility confirmations or repair instructions.

Historical record does not mean current approval. Some submissions describe handmade, altered, damaged, recalled or very old cribs that should not be placed back into use. Always check the exact crib model against current manufacturer information and CPSC recall records.
