Often moms and grandmothers want to know how to make a baby quilt as soon as the news of the little one's arrival is announce.  Even ladies who have never operated a sewing machine are suddenly interested in learning about batting, quilting patterns and stitches.  

Every baby should have his or her own special baby quilt. There's something precious and comforting about having your own quilt that someone cared enough to make for you. However, the time it takes to piece a handmade crib quilt is more than most people can handle.

There is much to be said for the love and labor that goes into piecing a quilt for a newborn, but if you can't make a crib quilt yourself, store bought is better than none at all. Better yet, pick up one of the many handmade quilts for sale in baby boutiques or through an online auction. Have a corner personalized with baby's name or monogram and take a "don't ask, don't tell" attitude and nobody will know that the selection of cotton quilting fabrics was not your own then choose an easy pattern and make the quilt yourself. If anyone at the baby shower is curious and asks you point blank whether or not you made the crib quilt, you aren't obliged to answer. Just give a wink and a knowing look and let them wonder what the truth of the matter may be.
