One of the simplest ways to create a newborn costume is to start with a distinctive hat and keep the rest of the outfit comfortable.



The little lion is a good example. A full mane instantly makes the costume recognizable, while the rest of the baby's clothing can stay simple. For photographs, I would keep the mane soft and make sure nothing around the baby's face is tight, scratchy or loose enough to cover the nose or mouth.

Newborn Piglet Costume

I still love the idea of a tiny piglet costume. The recognizable details are the ears, snout and curly tail, so the costume does not need many extra pieces.

A crocheted pig hat paired with a soft coordinating bottom can create the whole look. For a newborn photo session, I would use the costume only while the baby is awake and supervised and remove any piece that seems uncomfortable or shifts toward the baby's face.

Newborn Dinosaur Costume

The newborn dinosaur costume is another design that works particularly well in pictures. A row of soft spikes running from the hat down the back makes the costume easy to recognize without needing a mask or complicated accessories.

I would also plan the costume around the baby rather than around the photograph. Keep layers appropriate for the room temperature, make diaper access easy and avoid masks, cords, buttons, beads or other loose decorations near the baby.

If the costume is mainly for baby's first Halloween pictures, put it on shortly before taking the photos instead of expecting the baby to stay dressed in it for a long period.
