Free Crochet Diaper Cover Pattern for Babies 0–12 Months

This free crochet diaper cover pattern makes a simple baby cover in three sizes: newborn/0–3 months, 3–6 months and 6–12 months. The plain design keeps the waistband, rise and leg shaping easy to see, so you can get the fit right before adding any optional decoration.

Crochet Diaper Cover Sizes

This pattern is written in three sizes: newborn/0–3 months, 3–6 months and 6–12 months. The age labels are a starting point. If you can measure the baby, use the actual waist and rise along with the finished garment measurements below.

The cover is worked as one shaped piece from the back waist, down through the crotch and up to the front waist. After the side seams are joined, the waistband and leg edging are crocheted directly onto the cover.

These are expected finished measurements calculated from the gauge and stitch counts below. The full-rise figures include the body panel plus the expected depth added by the three-round waistband at both the front and back. They are not measurements taken from a physically test-crocheted sample, so checking your gauge matters.

If you're putting the cover over a bulky cloth diaper, measure over the diaper and any waterproof outer layer that will actually be worn underneath. This crochet cover is decorative. It does not replace a waterproof diaper cover.

Materials and Gauge

Yarn: Smooth worsted weight number 4 yarn. Have at least 200 yards available for any one size so you have enough for the cover, waistband, leg edging and finishing.

Hook: US H/8, 5 mm crochet hook, or the hook size needed to match gauge.

Also needed: Yarn needle, scissors and measuring tape.

Gauge: 14 half double crochet stitches and 10 rows = 4 inches.

Make the gauge swatch in half double crochet before starting the cover. Measure across the middle of the swatch rather than along an edge.

If you have more than 14 stitches in 4 inches, your stitches are too small. Try a larger hook. If you have fewer than 14 stitches, try a smaller hook.

If your gauge is off, the size is off. Fix that before you keep going.

US crochet terms used:

ch = chain

hdc = half double crochet

hdc2tog = half double crochet two stitches together

sc = single crochet

BLO = back loop only

sl st = slip stitch

Free Crochet Diaper Cover Pattern Notes

The turning chain does not count as a stitch. Work the first real stitch into the first stitch of the row.

Turn at the end of every flat row unless the instructions specifically tell you to fasten off.

The pattern begins at the back waist. The piece narrows toward the crotch, stays straight for four rows, widens again toward the front waist and then finishes with another straight section.

The back and front end with the same stitch count so the side edges line up cleanly when you fold the cover for assembly.

The plain HDC fabric does not have a required right side. Before assembly, choose the face you want on the outside of the finished cover and treat that as the right side for the remaining instructions.

Do not add increases or extra stitches at the crotch because it looks narrow while the piece is lying flat. The crotch width is intentional. The leg openings take their shape when the upper side seams are joined.

No buttons, drawstrings, elastic cord or separate decorative pieces are part of the basic pattern.

The stitch counts, row totals and expected measurements have been checked mathematically against the stated gauge. This pattern is not described as physically test-crocheted.

Newborn / 0–3 Month Crochet Diaper Cover

Beginning at the back waist:

Ch 28.

Row 1: Hdc in the second ch from the hook and in each ch across. 27 hdc. Turn.

Rows 2–5: Ch 1. Hdc in each st across. 27 hdc. Turn after each row.

Row 6: Ch 1. Hdc2tog over the first 2 sts, hdc in each st across to the final 2 sts, hdc2tog. 25 hdc. Turn.

Rows 7–13: Repeat the decrease used in Row 6, decreasing one stitch at each side of every row. Turn after each row.

Your stitch counts after these rows should be:

Row 7: 23 hdc

Row 8: 21 hdc

Row 9: 19 hdc

Row 10: 17 hdc

Row 11: 15 hdc

Row 12: 13 hdc

Row 13: 11 hdc

Rows 14–17: Ch 1. Hdc in each of the 11 sts across. Turn after each row.

You now have the narrow crotch section.

Row 18: Ch 1. Work 2 hdc in the first st, hdc in each st across to the final st, work 2 hdc in the final st. 13 hdc. Turn.

Rows 19–25: Repeat the increase used in Row 18, increasing one stitch at each side of every row. Turn after each row.

Your stitch counts after these rows should be:

Row 19: 15 hdc

Row 20: 17 hdc

Row 21: 19 hdc

Row 22: 21 hdc

Row 23: 23 hdc

Row 24: 25 hdc

Row 25: 27 hdc

Rows 26–30: Ch 1. Hdc in each of the 27 sts across. Turn after Rows 26–29. Do not turn after Row 30.

Fasten off.

The completed flat piece has 30 rows, with 27 stitches across each waist end and 11 stitches across the narrow crotch.

3–6 Month Crochet Diaper Cover

Beginning at the back waist:

Ch 31.

Row 1: Hdc in the second ch from the hook and in each ch across. 30 hdc. Turn.

Rows 2–6: Ch 1. Hdc in each st across. 30 hdc. Turn after each row.

Row 7: Ch 1. Hdc2tog over the first 2 sts, hdc in each st across to the final 2 sts, hdc2tog. 28 hdc. Turn.

Rows 8–15: Repeat the decrease used in Row 7, decreasing one stitch at each side of every row. Turn after each row.

Your stitch counts should be:

Row 8: 26 hdc

Row 9: 24 hdc

Row 10: 22 hdc

Row 11: 20 hdc

Row 12: 18 hdc

Row 13: 16 hdc

Row 14: 14 hdc

Row 15: 12 hdc

Rows 16–19: Ch 1. Hdc in each of the 12 sts across. Turn after each row.

The completed flat piece has 34 rows, with 30 stitches across each waist end and 12 stitches across the narrow crotch.

6–12 Month Crochet Diaper Cover

Beginning at the back waist:

Ch 34.

Row 1: Hdc in the second ch from the hook and in each ch across. 33 hdc. Turn.

Rows 2–7: Ch 1. Hdc in each st across. 33 hdc. Turn after each row.

Row 8: Ch 1. Hdc2tog over the first 2 sts, hdc in each st across to the final 2 sts, hdc2tog. 31 hdc. Turn.

Rows 9–17: Repeat the decrease used in Row 8, decreasing one stitch at each side of every row. Turn after each row.

Your stitch counts should be:

Row 9: 29 hdc

Row 10: 27 hdc

Row 11: 25 hdc

Row 12: 23 hdc

Rows 32–38: Ch 1. Hdc in each of the 33 sts across. Turn after Rows 32–37. Do not turn after Row 38.

Fasten off.

The completed flat piece has 38 rows, with 33 stitches across each waist end and 13 stitches across the narrow crotch.

Before assembly: Lay the piece flat without stretching it. At the stated gauge, the body should measure about 12 (13 5/8, 15 1/4) inches from the beginning edge to the final row for newborn/0–3 months (3–6 months, 6–12 months). Each waist end should measure about 7 3/4 (8 5/8, 9 3/8) inches across. If your measurements are noticeably different, check your gauge before sewing the side seams.

Leg Edging and Finishing

Join the Side Seams

Lay the flat diaper-cover piece with the right side facing up. The beginning-chain edge is the back waist and the final row is the front waist.

Fold the front section over the back section so the right sides face each other. Line up the front and back waist edges and match the row ends along both sides.

Thread a yarn needle with matching yarn. Starting at the waist on the first side, whipstitch through 5 paired row-end spaces for newborn/0–3 months, 6 paired row-end spaces for 3–6 months, or 7 paired row-end spaces for 6–12 months.

Each whipstitch should pass through one front row-end space and the matching back row-end space. Stop after the stated number of pairs. Do not sew into the shaped portion of the leg opening.

Secure the yarn and weave in the end on the wrong side.

Repeat on the second side using the same number of paired row-end spaces.

Turn the cover right side out before beginning the waistband.

Crochet the Waistband

Join yarn at either side seam along the top edge.

Waistband Round 1: Ch 1. Work 27 (30, 33) hdc across the front waist, placing one hdc in each stitch of the final row. Continue across the back waist by working one hdc into the unused foundation-chain loop below each of the 27 (30, 33) stitches from Row 1. Do not work an extra stitch into the turning-chain position. Join with a sl st to the first hdc.

Waistband Round 1 stitch counts: 54 (60, 66) hdc.

Waistband Round 2: Ch 1. Working in BLO, hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st. 54 (60, 66) hdc.

Waistband Round 3: Ch 1. Working in BLO, hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st. 54 (60, 66) hdc.

Fasten off.

The two BLO rounds create a ridged finish around the upper edge without adding elastic or a drawstring.

Edge the Leg Openings

After the side seams are complete, each newborn/0–3 month leg opening has 20 exposed row-end spaces, each 3–6 month leg opening has 22, and each 6–12 month leg opening has 24.

Join yarn at the bottom of one side seam.

Leg Round 1: Ch 1. Repeat the following sequence 10 (11, 12) times around the leg opening: work 2 sc in the next row-end space and 1 sc in the following row-end space. Join with a sl st to the first sc. 30 (33, 36) sc.

Leg Round 2: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. 30 (33, 36) sc.

Fasten off.

Repeat both rounds around the second leg opening using the same stitch count.

Do not add an extra stitch at the side seam. The two leg openings should have matching counts.

Final Inspection

Weave in every yarn end securely on the wrong side.

Check that both side seams cover the same number of row ends.

Count both finished leg openings and make sure they match.

Check that the waistband lies flat without twisting.

Look over the crotch and shaped edges for loose loops or missed stitches.

Remove any temporary clips or markers you may have used during assembly before the cover is worn.

Crochet Diaper Cover Fit and Measurements

Before deciding that the pattern size is wrong, check the gauge. A cover can be several inches off around the waist if the stitch gauge changes enough.

The finished waist circumference is calculated at about 15 1/2 inches for newborn/0–3 months, 17 1/4 inches for 3–6 months and 18 7/8 inches for 6–12 months before normal yarn stretch is taken into account.

The finished full rise is measured from the top of the back waistband, through the crotch and up to the top of the front waistband. The body panels contain 30, 34 and 38 rows. The three-round waistband adds expected depth at both the front and back. At the stated row gauge, the calculated finished full rise comes to about 14 1/2, 16 and 17 5/8 inches.

If you're making the cover for a particular baby, compare those numbers with measurements taken over the diaper the baby will wear underneath.

The waistband should sit securely without needing to cinch the baby's tummy. If it has to be stretched hard just to close around the waist, use the next size or correct the gauge.

Check the thighs too. The leg edging should rest around the upper leg without digging in.

Do not try to resize the entire cover by adding a few stitches only at the waist. The rise, crotch width and leg shaping work together. Changing only one part can leave you with a wider waistband and the same too-small crotch.

If the baby falls between two sizes, I would choose the size that gives enough rise and seat room, then check the waistband before making any adjustment.

Care and Use

Wash and dry the finished cover according to the care instructions on the yarn label. If you are using a yarn that can change noticeably after washing, make and wash your gauge swatch before relying on the finished measurements.

Check the side seams, waistband and leg edging before the cover is worn. Repair a loose yarn end or opening rather than trimming it and hoping it holds.

This is a decorative crochet diaper cover. It is not a diaper, a waterproof cloth-diaper cover or a substitute for the waterproof layer required by some cloth-diaper systems.

For baby photos, keep the baby supervised while the cover is being worn. Remove decorative photo clothing when the session is over.

This basic version deliberately has no buttons, dangling ties or separate embellishments. If you add your own decoration, attach it securely and think about how the finished cover will actually be used.
