Blue and Brown Baby Nursery

I decorated my baby boy’s blue and brown nursery with secondhand furniture, bargain finds and several projects that I made myself. Instead of purchasing a matching nursery collection, I searched Craigslist for affordable pieces with the shapes and storage that I needed.

After bringing the furniture home, I painted each piece either soft off-white or metallic silver. Repeating those two finishes helped the mismatched pieces look coordinated and gave the room a brighter, more polished appearance.

Blue and Brown Nursery Colors

The room combines rich brown fabrics with blue bedding, silver accents and crisp white details. Keeping the palette limited made it easier to blend furniture and accessories from several different sources.

I found the chandelier at a garage sale and gave it a completely new look. I spray-painted the small shades brown and decorated the fixture with crystals that I purchased individually. The crystals added sparkle, while the brown shades connected the chandelier to the curtains and bedding.

DIY Curtains and Crib Canopy

I made the nursery curtains from brown satin fabric that I found on the clearance rack at Joann Fabric. The satin gave the windows a soft sheen and made the inexpensive fabric look much more luxurious.

I also created the decorative draping above the crib. I gathered lightweight gauzy fabric around a large embroidery hoop and decorated the hoop with feathers before hanging it securely above the crib.

The flowing canopy became the main focal point of the room and softened the painted furniture and metallic finishes. Any canopy, hanging fabric or decorative trim should be installed securely and kept completely outside the baby’s sleeping space.

Silver Frames and Personal Wall Art

To decorate the walls, I collected several silver-colored picture frames from TJ Maxx. I filled them with black-and-white photographs of my husband and me, creating a personal gallery for our son.

The silver frames repeated the furniture finish and chandelier crystals, while the black-and-white photographs kept the display from competing with the blue and brown color scheme. A fluffy white rug from Costco completed the room and added a soft, bright layer beneath the darker colors.
