Is the Simmons Model 1404 89 17 Crib Safe to Use?

🧸 Is the Simmons Model 1404 89 17 Crib Safe to Use?
1. Check for Safety Recalls

Many older Simmons cribs β€” especially drop-side models β€” were recalled due to hazards including entrapment, suffocation, and falls.

Here are the official recall notices:

➑️ 2010 Simmons Drop-Side Crib Recall

➑️ 2001 Simmons Crib Recall

To check your exact model:

➑️ Search for Your Simmons Crib Model

If your crib falls under any recall, stop using it immediately.

2. Consider the Crib's Age

Federal crib safety standards changed in June 2011.
If your Simmons crib was made before 2011, it may not meet current safety requirements, even if it wasn’t recalled.

Common concerns:

Weakened wood joints

Outdated slat spacing

Drop-side hardware failure

Non-compliant construction standards

Older cribs carry higher risk simply due to age and wear.

3. Missing or Mismatched Hardware Makes the Crib Unsafe

A crib must never be used if:

Any hardware is missing

Parts have been replaced with non-original components

The crib is unstable or wobbly

You cannot confirm the correct hardware sizes

Improvised bolts or brackets can create dangerous gaps.

⚠️ Safety Considerations:

Confirm whether your crib is a recalled model.

Determine whether it is a drop-side crib.

Ensure all hardware is original, correct, and secure.

Cribs older than 10 years are generally not recommended for use.

If any safety concerns apply, it is usually best to retire the crib.
