I got the idea for my King of the Pond nursery theme from the exciting kids' character building storybooks from the "Another Sommer-Time Stories". The paintings that you see on the walls were all inspired by illustrations in the books that teach positive character traits.

As you can see from my baby boy nursery pictures and ideas that I got from the children's books, there is a large cast of characters found in nature including butterflies, tadpoles, jungle animals and more. Those were just some of the characters that I was able to fit below the blue sky painting technique used on the upper portion of the nursery walls.

I started decorating my King of the Pond nursery theme from the ground up starting with the baby bed that I found at a garage sale. I found the baby's dresser and changing table on Craigslist. When I got them home the first order of business was to paint all three items in a neutral color scheme of bright yellow and green. It was enough work that we know ahead of time what colors will be used for our second child.

I began working on painting the bookcase first, then the blue and white upper part of the ceiling and yellow on the lower portion. Last, I tackled painting the detailed storybook characters that took longer to complete than all the other jobs combined. Once I stepped back and took a look, I realized in focusing on the frog pond theme nursery that I had completely overlooked the interior of the closet. Picking up my paint brushes after they had been cleaned took discipline on my part, but I knew that I would not be truly satisfied until the final work was done in the closet and now our perfect nursery design is complete and we are waiting for the arrival of our baby boy.

2nd Place Nursery Decorating Contest Winner
by: Jan

I am pleased to announce Andy Nguyen of Houston, Texas as our 2nd Place Nursery Decorating Contest Winner for the King of the Pond nursery theme that he designed. His baby's nursery theme was based on a storybook whose focus is building positive character traits.

I asked Andy to share a few details about himself and I'm so very glad that I did as it is truly an inspiring story.

I was born in Vietnam and I am the middle child of 10 children. When I was 10 years old, I was on a battleship in the middle of East China Sea leaving the war behind in Vietnam. I remember one day looking up to the sky and seeing two helicopters flying over my head as it was running out of gas. The pilots were trying to make it to the battleship deck so they could land their helicopters.

The battleship had two propellers but was running on one propeller as the other was crippled. At the same time that was happening, I turned my head away from the helicopters, only to see a Cessna single engine plane that was also running out of gas that crashed into the sea. The crash resulted in the death of one person and another person being rescued. It wasn't until I grew older, that I realized the significance of what I had encountered that day.

My family came to the United States in 1975. We first lived in Canton, Ohio and then in 1979 we moved to Houston, Texas and I have made Houston my home.

In a long awaited desire to marry, 15 months ago that dream came true when I married a wonderful and lovely lady named, DeAnn. Just three months ago, we had a little boy named Truitt.

Professionally, I am a computer graphics designer, but my passion is to paint on canvas. My experiences in life have played a significant role in my life. I feel the events I encountered in life have helped shape my outlook in life.

It wasn't a one time event, but rather, a result of many experiences over the years. I see these experiences as a tool for me to apply when solving difficulty in life. Like each piece of the puzzle, I have to be collective in my thought process before I can put them together to make a beautiful puzzle.

I live my life as if was the last week on Earth. I make the most out of every moment.

In summary, my life is filled with serenity, love and compassion. Now having a family of my own, I feel it is complete. This is what inspired me to do my son's room as I did. Love is a strong driving force in my life and that is reflected in my paintings.

Congratulations to Andy, our 2nd Place Nursery Decorating Contest Winner for his spectacular King of the Pond Nursery theme!

A Nursery Filled with Life Lessons
by: Anonymous

Your artistic interpretation of this book for children is fantastic. The art is simple, to the point and well executed. The King of the Pond storybook is one of my favorites that I used to read to kids when I was a babysitter. Imagine my surprise when I lucked up on this room while looking at pictures of nurseries for my own baby expected early next year. Your picture definitely has my vote.

What an incredible natural nursery theme! Who would have thought that it was possible to decorate a baby's room starting with tadpoles and butterflies with the grand finale of lions!

Can you please, please send some closeup pictures into the contest so that we can see your work more clearly although it's easy to tell from this single photo that it is awesome!

by: Anonymous

WHAT????!! No one tells me anything!! Not only did I not know you were this talented, I didn't even know you were expecting. So of course, I didn't know you were naming your son after Teresa husband (Ha).

Andy, this is so beautiful! I had no idea you illustrated children's books! I did a mural for my granddaughter's room when she was born, but now I know it wasn't very good.
Thank you so much for sharing. I am blown away!

Green is Great!
by: Anonymous

I like how this room would be appropriate for a boy or a girl. Green is such a calm refreshing color and gender neutral. And the room could grow with the child because it is not so "Babyish." Good work!

This is an incredible room. I see it took a lot of effort, thought and time. The child is fortunate to have such a nice, safe, decorated room. It is full of love. I can sense great pride in the work of this parent.

Eligible to Win?

In your rules you state that the pictures should not have been submitted to any other sites but I just saw this picture had been submitted to another site. It was not a contest, but the rules of the contest said "any" site rather than that they not be entered in another nursery contest. I have the address if you want it. Shouldn't this entrant be disqualified?
