Can I use screws from the hardware store for a Simmons slumbertime crib? Every bolt and screw that came in the hardware kit with the crib has been lost.

My friend told me to just go to the hardware store and get replacements but I didn't want to do that without asking around to see if there might be other options.

Are Screws from the Hardware Store the Same as Crib Screws?
by: Anonymous

No, Kim, you should not just buy random screws from the hardware store or Walmart and use them to assemble your Simmons crib 249189-04-295.

Here’s why:

1. Crib screws/bolts are safety-critical parts.
Cribs are engineered so specific fasteners hold load points, joints, and moving parts together safely. Using the wrong size, thread, length, or grade of hardware can lead to structural failure, gaps, loosening over time, or even risk of collapse.

2. Hardware store screws often don’t match crib specifications.
General wood screws, machine screws, or bolts from a hardware store:

May be the wrong thread type (coarse vs fine)

May be the wrong diameter or length

May be too soft or too brittle for the stresses in a crib

Could strip threads in metal or wood legs

This can create unsafe conditions — especially in a crib where children crawl, sit, and pull on sides.

3. You need the exact replacement hardware.
Crib manufacturers (including Simmons) design and test their specific fasteners to meet the strength and safety requirements. Using anything else effectively bypasses those safety standards.

Instead of using random screws, you should:

Locate the manufacturer’s replacement parts for your Simmons crib 249189-04-295

Contact Simmons Kids customer support or the retailer you bought it from and request the exact replacement screws/bolts

Check if there’s a parts list in the manual that shows the correct fastener part numbers

Summary:
Don’t use random hardware store screws — they likely won’t match and could make the crib unsafe. Get the correct replacement fasteners designed for your specific crib model.

Unique Baby Gear Ideas shares general safety information based on guidance from U.S. safety agencies and child-safety experts, who advise families not to use drop-side cribs. This guidance reflects current U.S. safety regulations and applies regardless of a crib’s age or condition.

Federal safety standards prohibit the manufacture, sale, and distribution of drop-side cribs. While enforcement focuses on commercial activity, safety agencies strongly advise against using drop-side cribs in any setting due to the risks they pose.

If you own a drop-side crib, safety agencies recommend removing it from use permanently and following local disposal or recycling guidelines so it cannot be reused.
