The free newborn baby sweater and hat set knitting pattern is a real cutie with lots of sweet details.
The original publication indicated that the outfit was intended for a "little prince" but as you can see from the photograph, it is gender neutral and would be suitable for a baby boy or girl.
In fact, the way the cap is made, with beading that gathers when the knitted tie is threaded through actually seems a slightly feminine rather than masculine but a few understated ruffles on an infant's clothes are acceptable.
Pastel colors are mentioned in most vintage baby knitting patterns and are still popular with crafters today. However, beautiful, deep shades are also being used in modern needlework projects for infants.
Go here to see this the collection of 20 patterns for baby hats with knitted ruffles and pom poms, wraps and cocoons that, as you can see from the above photo, make excellent and inexpensive props for an infant's first portrait.
