Yarn, Needles and Gauge

Yarn: 3-ply fingering-weight yarn in pink and white, or two colors of your choice.

Yarn Amount: Approximately ½ ounce total. The original pattern does not specify how the amount is divided between the two colors, so have extra yarn available.

Knitting Needles: One pair of old UK Size 12 straight knitting needles, equivalent to approximately US 2 (2.75 mm). Use the needle size needed to obtain the stated gauge.

Notions: Narrow satin ribbon and a yarn needle for seaming.

Needles: US 1 (2.25 mm) straight knitting needles (old UK/Australian Size 12)

Approximate Measurements: Sole measures approximately 3½–4 inches long with a cuff about 2 inches high before rolling.

Sole

Cast on 20 stitches.

Row 1 (RS): Knit.

Row 2 (WS): M1, knit to the last 2 stitches, M1, K1.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 four more times.

Stitch Count: 30 stitches.

Knit the next 2 rows.

Shape the Sole

Continue in garter stitch.

Decrease 1 stitch at both ends of every other row until 20 stitches remain.

Stitch Count: 20 stitches.

Knit the next 2 rows.

Shape the Toe

Stitch Count: 29 stitches.

Knit 3 rows in garter stitch, increasing 1 stitch at the toe edge on the second row.

Stitch Count: 30 stitches.

Beginning with Row 1 of the matching Coat (Pattern A), continue working that stitch pattern while increasing 1 stitch at the toe edge every other row until 34 stitches are on the needle. Finish after completing a heel-edge row.

Stitch Count: 34 stitches.

Create the Instep Opening

Break the white yarn.

Using pink yarn, bind off 15 stitches.

Join the white yarn and bind off 1 additional stitch.

Stitch Count: 18 stitches remain.

Note: The 16 bound-off stitches create the opening across the top of the foot.

Beginning with Row 1 of the Coat (Pattern A), work in that stitch pattern to the last 2 stitches, M1, K1.

Finishing

• Sew the center back seam.
