1986 Jenny Lind Crib Replacement Parts
by: Anonymous

Because your Jenny Lind crib was manufactured a good many years ago, there are a few important things to know before looking for hardware:

First, about safety

Cribs made in the mid-1980s were built long before current crib safety standards. Even if you were able to find all the original hardware, including the mattress support mechanism, the crib would not meet today’s safety requirements for infant sleep. The biggest concerns are:

Mattress support systems that can loosen or collapse over time

Slat spacing that may no longer be considered safe

Hardware designs that were never tested to modern standards

For that reason, manufacturers no longer make or support replacement hardware for cribs of this age.

About the missing mattress support hardware

The part you’re describing — the system that raises, lowers, and holds the mattress — is usually a specific, model-matched assembly (often hooks, brackets, springs, or rails). Unfortunately:

These parts were never standardized

Generic hardware is not safe to substitute

Mixing modern hardware with a 1980s crib frame can create serious failure risks

That’s why you’re having trouble finding replacements — they simply aren’t made anymore.

What can you safely do?

Many parents in your situation choose one of these options instead:

Repurpose the crib as a keepsake, bench, or decorative piece

Convert it for display only, not for sleep

Use it for dolls or memory storage, preserving the sentimental value

If your goal is to use a crib for a baby today, the safest option is a new crib that meets current safety standards — I know that’s not always the answer people hope for, but safety really does come first here.

If you’d like help beyond this

If you want, I can:

Help you identify the exact Jenny Lind style you have

Suggest safe ways to repurpose the crib

Help you choose a modern Jenny Lind–style crib that looks very similar to your original one

So many parents ask about these exact cribs because they were beautifully made but sometimes it's just not a good idea to use them for a baby.
