Baby Keith's unique nursery with homemade baby crib made from hardwoods including maple, oak, and black walnut woods that dad dovetailed.

Our baby, Keith's, unique nursery has been decorated on a tight budget. Since my husband is very talented and creative, we combined our loves of different outdoor things with our decorating goals for our boy's room.

My husband is an arborist and loves trees while I am a horse person also with a great love of nature and animals. As you can see from the photos, our personality traits are evident in the nursery décor.

Q: There are many amazing natural features in Keith's nursery but the crib is outstanding. Is this a family piece?

A: My husband built the baby's crib himself using an assortment of hardwoods including maple, oak, and black walnut woods that he dovetailed together. As far as handed down, family pieces; the dresser was my baby dresser that I used 28 years ago.

Q: Did your talented arborist husband also paint the nursery wall tree mural with the cute baby forest animals?

A: He did hand paint the tree mural PLUS he made the sponges that he used to sponge on the leaves himself as well as the stencil pattern that we used to paint the rocking horse border.

Q:The room has a very homey, personalized feel to it that usually comes from using decorative items that have special meaning to mom and dad. Are there any items that were yours as a child other than the dresser that Keith will also use and enjoy?

A: The rocking horses, baby mobiles, stuffed animals and other baby things were mostly ours that we had in our rooms during our childhoods and the nursery rocking chair was my mother's.

Q: I love the pretty, blue wall hanging over the crib with the baby's name on it. Did you make the crib quilt yourself or did you have it professionally made?

A: The blanket that we hung above the crib was a gift that was handmade by a friend.

Crib Plans
by: Destiny

I see that the baby's dad has advanced woodworking skills and didn't have to use crib plans. That is so amazing and such a great story to include in Baby Keith's memory book.

It feels comfortable and easy, which means a lot of hard work was put into it. I love that it is homemade!

RE: Cool Crib

Tina,

My husband did not use a design, he made it up as he went along just looking at tutorials online of different wood working, and trial and error experimenting. Some of the pieces he made multiple times before he liked it. He ended up dovetailing things because we didn't have all the fancy tools to do it well other ways, so he went old fashioned with it ;) Thanks for your interest in it though, I feel so lucky that my husband is so talented!

Cool Crib
by: Tina

My dad does some woodworking and I would love to have him make a bed for my baby.

Did your husband use a pattern or did he design it himself? If he used a pattern, would you mind telling me where he found it? Thanks!
