FREE CURTAIN PATTERNS
SEWING a BABY'S NURSERY DECORATIONS

Free curtain patterns along with many other free sewing patterns online are a great way for a mom on a budget to get the nursery decor of her dreams without blowing the family budget. This is very handy for a mom with oddly shaped windows as stock curtains from a discount baby store most likely would not fit even if they came in our favorite fabrics.

Plus, in contemporary decorating, nursery window treatments don't necessarily have to match the crib bedding sets print for print. Take advantage of large selections of yards and yards of fabric to sew online, free curtain pattern instructions and use your own creativity and imagination to create unique window treatments for your baby's nursery! Dress up a pair of plain drapes that you whipped up on the cheap with some cool curtain hardware. Everybody will marvel at your expensive designer window treatments and nobody's the wiser!

If your curtain hardware is not in keeping with your theme, don't throw them out! Decorative curtain rods are not cheap and you create some pretty jazzy custom looks with the addition of some fancy, stylish curtain rod finials and other stuff to bring them up to speed with the rest of the room!

Once we choose our baby crib bedding sets we may find that we are limited in our selection of nursery window treatments that will fit our windows and feature motifs taken from the fabric in the baby bedding set. You can outfit your windows whether they are for a Dr. Seuss or Sesame Street themed room for a baby boy's room, ladybug bedroom or garden themes or any other classic nursery theme!

Here's a fabulous idea that I wanted to share that is so cute in a pirate themed room. Make a simple gathered window valance and then anchor an authentic looking pirate hat in the center with knotted ropes (to resemble a ship's rigging) pulled to the edges of the windows much like you would a floor length drapery panel. Be careful not to allow your decorative cording to fall to where a small child can get to them!

This is just an example of all the cool things you can do with cheap nursery curtains that you make yourself! If you want a tutorial or lessons on how to start, take advantage of some of the sites that feature free curtain patterns. They are free and great for a frugal person such as yourself to use for absolutely no charge!

Most have very simple sewing instructions that anyone can follow with ease. A simple ruffled window topper or valance only requires a few straight seams and a minimal amount of skill. And those ruffles are so appropriate for so many baby girl's nursery curtains. Keep in mind the more tailored a pattern looks, the more skilled the seamstress must be to keep those lines crisp and exact, so find a free curtain pattern that is gathered for your first attempt at nursery window decoration. Add a precious girly curtain rod and you will have a custom window treatment that you will be proud to show to your friends!

If you are an experienced seamstress, deciding which patterns and colors that will be best with your nursery decor may be your most difficult task. The trip to the fabric store either online or to the mall will dazzle you with possibilities and be loads of fun! If you have not chosen your crib linens, your options are wide open! Have a BLAST gather fabric swatches, compare prices and prints and just have a party! Never make your final purchase before taking your favorites home and laying them next to other decorative accessories and viewing them side by side with the nursery wall paint color. Once you've worked so hard on that nursery painting technique, you will want it to shine!

Alright! Have you found the perfect coordinating fabric? Don't be afraid to mix ginghams, plaids, checks or crinkled seersucker. A little something unexpected often is a real eye-catcher. Ok it's time to check out some of the free curtain patterns I mentioned earlier.

Here are a few easy patterns to choose from!

Here are some recommended instructions for nursery window sewing patterns:

  • sewingpatternreview dot com - Sewing Pattern Review Community

  • babylock dot com - Sewing Projects for Baby Lock Sergers

  • crochetpatterncentral dot com - Crochet Patterns that are adaptable for filet crochet curtains, tie backs, shade pulls and edgings. Every possible use of crochet for window treatments is featured here.

  • www.hassdesign dot com - Perfect filet crochet curtain panels for a dragonfly nursery theme and many others!

There are some fun hot glue tropical leaf window topper projects where you can glue silk leaves to an existing cornice board.

This would be perfect for a tiki hut, beach or jungle nursery theme! How lush, green and original and CHEAP! You can acheive luxury nursery decor using free curtain patterns and your handy sewing machine or crochet hook!

Then of course you will want some coordinating hardware and curtain rods. If you have some woodworking or crafting skills you can:

  • Make a decorative cornice board for a crisp tailored look
  • Make your own curtain rod for a fishing or even a beach theme nursery using a fishing pole to gather your homemade valance on. Display a few colorful, plastic fishing lures or worms, frogs or baby turtles for baby to enjoy!
  • Use a baseball bat for a baby boy's baseball nursery decor accessory. Hang a baseball mit closeby or on each end of your crafty do it yourself drapery rod or on the tieback pegs on each side.
  • Sew a rod pocket seam across some pennants or banners and use them as tab top window toppers for a sports theme bedroom.
  • To embellish your curtain tiebacks, buttonhole a decorative baby cowboy boot on each one. Giddy up cowboy!
