PORTABLE BABY CRIBS
LIGHTWEIGHT TRAVEL CRIBS

Portable baby cribs are handy for so many different reasons. If you travel, camp or occasionally need for baby to sleep somewhere other than in the nursery this is a modern invention that you don't want to live without. If making the list of baby gear to take camping, a lightweight crib should be at the top of your list.

When packing the necessities for traveling with an infant, the pounds can add up very quickly. That's why the investment in light, portable baby beds and gear is worth every penny even for the most frugal of parents. Special travel cots, swings and seats aren't cheap but you can't exactly pack up the nursery and take it backpacking either. The key is to find as many lightweight, foldable items as you can at inexpensive prices with the baby's bed at the top of your list.

You have two choices in my opinion. It's up to you to decide which one is best.

1. Buy a top rated new bed after reading reviews, take good care of it and resell it after your baby outgrows it to recoup some of your initial outlay.

2. Buy a used bed in good condition that has gotten positive consumer reviews with the discount already figured in on the front end.

WHAT TO SHOP FOR
Qualities that you should look for in portable baby cribsshould be:

  • the ability to fold or collapse the crib into a small package
  • that it is light weight and easy to carry
  • that it has a good mattress with properly fitting travel crib sheets, bedding or comforters
  • that it has a bassinet for newborn infants
  • that it comes with mosquito netting

Even if you travel with your baby in a fancy air-conditioned camper, mosquito netting is a desirable feature in a portable crib. If you find a crib with netting you get baby bug protection and a travel bed all for one cheap price. That's my kind of baby travel gear!

The best advice that I can offer is that when shopping for portable baby cribs for camping or travelling with baby or would be: find the safest, lightest, compact crib with a bassinet that you can afford.

Camping with newborn babies is challenging so any tips and suggestions that you can pick up from other parents who travel with their babies will be very helpful. Another idea is to read reviews of portable baby cribs that are currently on the market. At the time of this article the Graco Travel Lite Crib is rated very highly and appears to be one of the best choices.

Most portable cribs now coming colors to match any nursery theme with colors ranging from gender neutral shades of green to dark chocolate brown each with matching crib sheets. The pros by far outweigh the cons, but one negative comment that caught my eye was the one that stated that the crib mattress was rather thin. The review gave the suggestion that you might be able to add padding or otherwise add to the thickness of the travel crib mattress. You should know that it may be inadvisable to add padding or change the size of the crib mattress. Altering the size of the mattress, crib sheets or other bedding might not fit properly which could pose a danger to your child.
