Another grand idea would be to purchase a piece of carpet with a gender neutral or unisex pattern and it can serve you beautifully through several baby boys or girls! An example of this tactic would be to choose a colorful Sesame Street charactor rug that would appeal to both sexes. Paint the wall a lively shade then create a visual interest wall by grouping some Sesame Street wallies, decals or wallpaper cut outs for your baby to enjoy viewing from the crib.

Whether you will be using nursery rugs as an accent piece or building your nursery themes around a novelty motif throw rug, when the rug will be used in a nursery there are certain things to consider that might not be important for a rug in any other part of your home.

Ideally:

• The rug should have a non-slip backing
• Be fire retardent
• Clean and Freshen easily cleaned
• Soft enough to give baby a nice play surface

If the rug you love is not easy to clean, it should be cheap enough that it won't break your heart to throw it out when it's dirty!

For instance a shag or braided rug will not be easily cleaned.

If your baby has allergies you may want to consider one of the rugs available made of wool (that is unless your baby is also allergic to wool!), made without chemicals or dyes. Ask if the rug has mothproofing or stain protection applied. Funky faux fur rugs would not be a good choice for a baby with these problems.

Wool is a naturally flame retardant fiber so there would be no need to apply a flame retardant. This type of rug is better in terms of air quality in your home. A good thing for babies with allergies or asthma. I'm no doctor and don't claim to give medical advice, but I know we had a large round throw rug when she was born that flared her eczema out every time she played on it.

The only bad thing about this type of rug is that it's not colorful (NO DYES) so, if your little one has allergies and this is the rug for you, I would look in another area of the nursery other than the carpet for inspiration.

If you are looking for a baby rug, durability will not be as much of an issue as it might be when looking for a rug for an older kid. Nylon fiber is always a good choice as it is strong and resists stains. A fluffy or shag rug might look lovely the first day or so, but after that the maintenance may begin to be a bit much. Look for a nursery theme rug with a lower pile.

COLOR
Once upon a time nursery accessories meant pastel colors. No more! In a nursery theme for a little girl the popular colors range from bright cheery yellows to royal princess purples. For a baby boy, the current trends are strong contrasts with nautical themes of primary colors in blues and reds! Nursery furniture comes in some bold shades that our moms would never have dreamed of! Nothing is really set in stone or off limits in color.
