BLACK and WHITE BABY SHOWER CAKES

All black and white baby shower cakes and cupcakes are not as "minimalist" by design as the ones in the above pictures. Elaborate layered cakes with fondant to duplicate damask and toile patterns are seen at even the most casual baby showers.


Monochromatic black and white cakes at wedding receptions are kind of a no-brainer since many modern bridal gowns are white and most grooms wear black tuxedos with a white tuxedo shirt. But black and white decorations on a cake for a baby shower...let's just say that until black and white baby bedding became so popular the colors (or lack of them) would have been a harder sell.

Now we see them popping up accented with bright colors that make a spring day seem dull in comparison. And decorations? Black and white invitations, decorations and partyware that are in obvious baby themes (not solid black and white) are easy to locate. The themes include baby stroller themes, modern mom themes and even penguin themes! And then there are the more transitional patterns of black and white damask, polka dots and stripes and paisley shaped cake decorations not to mention the black and white "bow-tie" cupcakes that we see in the pictures above that are a creation of Sweet Cupcakes and Treats.


DECORATING BLACK AND WHITE BABY SHOWER CAKES and CUPCAKES

I am a firm believer in leaving the cake decorating duties to the professionals but if you are a more creative and capable baker than yours truly, here are some ideas for decorating black and white baby shower cupcakes and cakes.

• 
  Cover your cake or cupcake in white fondant and decorate using a thin satin (or fondant) ribbon either draped in swags or tied in bows with a sparkling silver, gold or perhaps a pearl bead as an accent.
  
  
• Tie a thin black ribbon around the base of each layer of the cake.
  
  
• Frosting dots or fondant polka dots cut outs
  
• Alternating black and white cupcakes around a cupcake pedestal or stand or a cake with alternating black and white layers
  
• Black damask fondant cutouts arranged on solid white fondant.
  
• Black monograms framed with elaborate scrollwork on the top of the cupcake or as a medallion on a layer cake
  
• Black airbrushed pictures or designs on white
  
• Zebra stripes
  

And those are just a few of the examples of black and white baby shower cakes that you can make (or in my case, have made!) for your celebration.
