There is always controversy regarding the safe use of a baby pillow for newborn babies. The confusion begins when moms get pretty, personalized pillows as gifts at the shower or maybe there is a family heirloom that they are dying to show off to their friends. They are frustrated because they know that it's not safe to use them in the baby's bed. What's a mom to do? How can we display our pretty pillows and still keep baby safe?
This is a no-brainer question to informed parents. They understand that soft and fluffy toys or pillows around a sleeping baby's head could be a recipe for disaster. However, there are many who consider a comfortable pillow for the head to be a part of a well made bed. After all, most bedding sets come with two sheets and two pillow cases, right? It's assumed that every bed over full size will have a set of pillows where sleeping people lay their weary heads to prevent an early morning neck ache. Somebody needs to inform new parents that the rules for head pillows in baby cribs are different, so here we go.
BABIES DON'T NEED PILLOWS
Babies don’t have the same needs or opinions as their parents. No matter how thoughtful and considerate their motives a parent who leaves a baby pillow in the crib with their newborn baby is taking what many consider to be; a dangerous risk of suffocation. Safe bedding for infants is more important than comfortable bedding to adults and most experts take the stance that less nursery bedding is best.
DECORATIVE BABY PILLOWS and BABY BEDDING SETS
You might ask why so many designer baby crib sets come with a pretty pillow. The answer could easily be that the manufacturer simply wanted to set their product apart from less expensive products. What is luxury after all but stuff that is probably not necessary. Just because a matching, custom baby pillow is included in the nursery bedding collection doesn’t mean that it must be used as a baby sleep pillow; you can use it to support your back in the nursery rocker or as a baby nursing pillow if your favorite happens to be out of reach.
PERSONALIZED BABY CRIB PILLOWS
The practice of decorating pillows and making personalized baby pillow cases is very popular trend. Personalized baby crib pillows covered with a pretty, embroidered baby pillow case not only makes the gift more personal; the washable cases make them easier to keep clean. So far as decorating the crib is concerned, many homeowners love to pile cushions and accent pillows in their bedrooms to make the space seem more warm and cozy. The same decorating technique can be used in the nursery or the crib. The decorative effect is effective and has the capability of tying all the fabric patterns in the room together. There’s nothing wrong with using this soft and cushy style of décor in the nursery so long as everybody understands that those cute pillows are not a safe place to rest a sleeping baby’s head.
WHEN ARE PILLOWS SAFE?
Baby sleep pillows are not considered safe for children under the age of two. Another reason beyond the issue of possible suffocation that would prevent my ever putting pillows in my baby’s crib would be that a pillow might raise a standing baby to a height where they could easily fall over the crib rails. So, there are many reasons why you should wait until your child is in a toddler bed before considering a pillow in his or her bed. Even then, pillows should be bought that have been made for children and not a thick, fluffy adult size pillow or a homemade baby pillow that might put your child in unnecessary danger.
